We can’t stand by and watch racecourse fail

IN the week that Folkestone Racecourse holds its final race meeting and last week Hereford ran its last horserace, it is remarkable that councillor John Holland believes that Warwick District Council should stand idly by and watch Warwick Racecourse fail (Courier last week).

It is clear that the Warwick town councillor didn’t read the report that was presented to members of the executive last Wednesday. If he had, he would have understood that horse racing in Britain is experiencing seismic changes which threaten the very existence of many of the country’s racecourses. He would also have been clear about the contribution that the racecourse makes to the local economy and the enjoyment it brings to many of his ward’s residents.

Let’s be clear, the six thousand pounds isn’t a subsidy for normal day-to-day activities. It’s a contribution to an appraisal to help Warwick Racecourse and Warwick District Council understand what steps need to be taken to ensure that the whole of St Mary’s Lands has a sustainable and viable future.

I would hope that everybody would get behind the Racecourse and what better way to show that support than by attending the next meeting on December 31. What a great way to celebrate New Year’s Eve! - Councillor Michael Doody, Leader, Warwick District Council.
