We will continue to fight

Last week’s Courier carried an excellent letter from Les Kent of Warwick wherein he recounted townspeople’s opposition to development in St Mary’s Land in the 1970s.

There was much ado about various development proposals over three decades ago, and I recall one memorable victory for the people. We vigorously opposed plans to enlarge the nine hole golf course up to 18 holes and excavate a further lake on common land approaching the railway line.

Leading Tory councillor John Howlett was supporter of the proposals and at the height of our opposition campaign he stated that our opposition would fail and he looked forward to victory.

The consequence is that we won the day and development proposals were thrown out. The proposals remain a pipe dream now as it was then and there are some of us left who will fight on with the people of Warwick to save our common.
