Where is all the money coming from?

We hear our Goverment calling for cutbacks, in everything from our armed forces to public pensions, services, saying that the country, is in so much debt, yet in their next breath we hear that HS2 is to go ahead, with a starting price tag of £100 billion, and now we hear that London needs another Airport, with another astronomical price tag.

Well we the public must start to ask is the country in debt or not, because if we are making cutbacks, to reduce the debt, then where are these billions coming from? We all know that the Conservatives like to keep the worker in check by taking steps to ensure that they are out of work, which happened in the early 80s. This type of action only helps to reduce wages, and does nothing to stave off inflation, since they are powerless to control prices.

If people are expected to cut back, then our stores should be forced to reduce their profits in order to help, after all if one has no money coming in then one cannot spend it. This is only proved by the fact that wages are being kept down yet still inflation grows.

Though I know that both national and local goverments seem to have a different approach, they seem to say we have no money then magic millions from out of the air. I know this is the attitude of goverment departments. Some years ago I was actually told that even though I was receiving no unemployment at that time, it was possible for me to spend £40 per month on the then poll tax. Unfortunately the official, was not able nor willing to tell me how.

The real gripe for this letter, is the fact that a large magority of the public, do not support this HS2 rail line because of the upset this will cause to both the countryside, and to those people who must lose their homes and businesses (farmers) in order for the business and wealthy, to be allowed to travel in comfort, something not extended to the normal users of the railways.

Now we are being told that London needs another airport with I suppose another astronomical price tag. Yet our goverment keeps telling us the country is in debt.

I feel sure the majority of Londoners also feel a new airport is not needed, though I suppose that they too will be told it will go ahead even if you don’t want it.

Where’s the democracy? We don’t want either, but we are liable to get them. Thanks for a good paper. - Colin Baker, Mason Avenue, Leamington.
