Why would they wish this on us all?

It was with some pleasure that I read of the rejection of the planning application for the oversized, out-of-keeping and ill-conceived shopping arcade proposal put forward by Wilson Bowden.

One of the many benefits of living in Leamington is its mixture of national retail shops (whose marketing logos have been restricted by planning limitations) and individual boutiques of unique character. A total separation from the norms of the likes of Birmingham, Solihull and Coventry which it would appear some of the planning committee members and Wilson Bowden would wish the town to become. I ask the question – “why would they wish this on us all?”

I, like you, have no doubt that a reapplication will soon be on its way to the planning officers. The next time I would hope that a more transparent examination of the business case would be illustrated in the Courier so more local residents are aware of the issues and can make their case when the time comes.

Maybe a comparison of the statements and projections submitted by Wilson Bowden in the support of the Livery Street Development, made some years ago, compared with the apparent dismal outcomes we see every day may better illustrate the worth or not of the Clarendon Arcade to our town.

As in the case of Livery Street I fear that any decisions based on the the overstated worth of the Clarendon Arcade to the town, if believed, would be something all the residents of Leamington would come to regret over time. - Chris Cox, Lansdowne Circus, Leamington.
