Will works protect us from river floods?

Such joy! Severn Trent has nearly finished the sewer works. Such anguish! They’re heading our way, south of the river. I’m sure I speak for many residents in CV31 who read with dismay the prospect of more digging up. And will they carve up the nice new resurfaced roads of Adelaide Road, Charlotte Street, Tachbrook Road? I think there’ll be a riot if they do! I hope the county council and Severn Trent are working together on a sensible plan, but forgive my scepticism.

The water company promises that these new sewers will prevent the risk of sewer flooding in heavy rain, but it would be comforting to hear that the sewers and drains might also offer some protection from river flooding. This present dry spell will eventually end and when the rains come there will be a lot more surface water than we need. Can we hope that as a reward for all the roadworks we can feel confident that if and when the Leam repeats its great flood of Easter 1998 Old Town’s streets, shops and houses stay dry? - Jeremy D Lampitt.
