Passer-by tries to help as man dies in crash

A MAN was killed and three other people were seriously injured in a crash near Leamington on Tuesday evening.

The man who died was in the front passenger seat of a black Honda Accord car that was in collision with a Ford Mondeo near the Greys Mallory roundabout in Europa Way shortly after 8pm. A DAF lorry was also involved in the accident.

The Accord’s driver and two women in the back seat were trapped and seriously injured in the crash. One passenger, a woman believed to be in her 20s, suffered a serious head injury and a fractured arm and leg.

The other back seat passenger, a woman also believed to be in her 20s, sustained breaks to one leg.

The driver, a man in his 20s, sustained serious fractures to his arms and legs. Firefighters helped free him while ambulance crews worked to stabilise his injuries.

All three were taken to University Hospital in Coventry where one of the women is described as being in a critical condition.

The driver and sole occupant of the Mondeo, a man in his 30s, received only minor injuries.

Sydenham man Balvinder Jandu arrived at the scene seconds after the crash and called the emergency services.

He met the Mondeo driver, who had climbed out of a window, but said the Accord was in “a very bad state”.

Mr Jandu helped the driver and put him in the recovery position but could do nothing for the passenger in the front seat, who was unconscious.

He said: “My first thought was whether there were any kids in the car and if they were strapped in.

“It was not the best thing to see. I just hope I was helpful in some way.

“I’m so sorry for the family who have lost someone.”

The Accord and the lorry were both heading away from Leamington, while the Mondeo was travelling the other way.

The road was closed until shortly before 3am on Wednesday while investigators worked at the scene.

Anyone who was travelling along Europa Way shortly before the crash, who may have seen the Accord before the collision, or who witnessed the crash should contact Sgt Geoff Bell at the major investigation unit on 415415.
