Her tweet was originally posted last year and was deleted after a complaint, but has since been brought into the public’s attention after being re-posted in a recent Twitter thread.

In the tweet, Cllr Grainger said that she was going to “choose a random Indian landline number” and ask if “they have had an accident in the last 3 years”.

In a statement, the Labour Group said: “We are shocked and hugely disappointed by Cllr Grainger’s racist remarks.

“Warwick District is a diverse and tolerant community where residents deserve for their representatives to value and treat others with respect.

"The councillor’s derogatory views simply have no place in the council’s leadership."

The group are set to raise the issue at tonight's full council meeting at which Cllr Grainger is due to make a statement in response.

The Courier has approached Cllr Grainger for a comment having forwarded the Labour group's email to her but the councillor has yet to respond.

“Her positions, especially as Deputy Leader of the Council and portfolio holder of neighbourhood and culture, have become untenable.

“We call on Cllr Grainger to resign from her leadership positions on the Council immediately, so trust between our communities and our Council can be restored.”

A report from the meeting will be published tomorrow (Friday January 8).
