A college group has ensured food from its shops hasn’t gone to waste by completing a trio of deliveries to local food banks in Warwick and Rugby.

WCG (formerly Warwickshire College Group) has been donating unused food from shops at its colleges to support people in need in the Warwick District.

More than £500 worth of food has been donated over the course of the last three months, with staff from the college visiting the Trust at St Mary’s Church in Rugby at the end of each month since the pandemic began.

For the final month the college donated to the Rugby branch of the Trussell Trust.

Items donated have included cakes, crisps and fizzy drinks, with the college group donating any items that would have gone out of date before students and staff are expected to return.

Peter Husband, chief operating officer and group principal for WCG, said: “We hadn’t ordered masses of food because we had anticipated the closure of the college, but we still had lots of stock sitting on the shelves.

“It’s important to us that the food doesn’t go to waste, so we’re making use of it by giving it all away to a worthwhile cause in the form of the Trussell Trust.

“We took our first delivery at the end of March and have continued to do that every month, writing off the cost at the college month by month.

“One of the children there looked delighted when we walked in with the big box of crisps, it was lovely to see.

“We have been supporting the Trust for a while now and at Christmas some of our students put food parcels together to hand over to the Trust.

“The team at the Trussell Trust have been working tirelessly over the last few months and we would like to thank them for the work they are doing to support people in the district.”
