Completion of a major road 'improvement scheme' in Warwick is set to be delayed until autumn

Work has been taking place in the area since January for the 'Stanks Island and Birmingham Road Improvement Scheme'.

The scheme is being done to ease traffic flow in and out of Warwick town centre, improve air quality and increase cycling and pedestrian links is now expected to be completed later than originally planned.

Initially before the works started the council estimated that the works would be completed in spring but in February Warwickshire County Council announced that the completion of the project would be delayed.

At the time the council did not know how long the delay would be but now it has been announced the scheme is not expected to be completed until autumn.

A spokesperson for Warwickshire County Council said: "The Stanks Island Scheme is now expected to be completed in autumn 2020.

"This is due to several factors including the discovery of a number of unchartered utilities at various locations throughout the site and an abnormally wet winter making ground conditions unworkable.

"Work has continued through the Covid-19 pandemic, however only where works were not affected by issues with the supply chain.

"Now that the expected impact of the virus has been programmed by the contractor, it is only now that we are able to release an expected construction end date of Autumn 2020."

Wedgnock to St Michaels Road

The road widening and revised kerbline have been completed ready for surfacing at this location. Kerbing has been completed down to the tie in point towards St Michaels Road and edgings for the footway have also been installed between St Michaels Road and Wedgnock Lane.

Birmingham Road North

Works on the embankment have continued and a significant length of the new drainage system has been installed including multiple catchpits. Multiple gullies have been installed and ducting road crossings have also been completed.

Haywood Road

Due to the social distancing guidelines and its effect on the surfacing operations, Haywood continues to remain closed and is being used to store materials. This helps the contractor to mitigate the supply issues again found due to Coronavirus. NAL Sockets for lighting columns are in place ready for signal pole installation and tactile crossings are also being installed.

SE Footpath

Road widening has been completed in this area and kerbing operations have also finished. Installation of drainage and a new maintenance bay are currently being installed. Gas services located in the area have prevented the widening workstowards Eastley Crescent but the utility provider is due on site in the coming weeks to undertake diversionary works.

East Splitter

Road widening on the roundabout including road construction and kerbing has been finished and is now ready for surfacing. Road crossings and installation of utilities have also been completed in this area. Works extending the splitter down towards Haywood Road are ongoing.

New Street Lighting Columns

New street lighting columns have been installed throughout the site and are now awaiting electrical switchover from the old columns. This work completes a large section of the nearly 50 new Street Lighting columns to be installed throughout the site.
