'Deep grief and sorrow' - Rugby mayor issues heartfelt tribute following Prince Philip's death

Rugby s mayor has spoken of his deep grief and sorrow following the death of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh today, April 9.

Earlier today Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Philip died peacefully in Windsor Castle this morning, at the age of 99.

Tributes for the Second World War veteran and public servant of more than 70 years have been flooding in from around the world.

And Rugby mayor Cllr Bill Lewis has spoken on behalf of the borough.

Cllr Lewis said: "On behalf of the residents of our Borough I would like to express our deep grief and sorrow on hearing the news that His Royal Highness Prince Philip has died.

"As a borough and as a nation, we must draw together.

"In neighbourhoods and across communities in Rugby and in the surrounding villages we pause and reflect on Prince Philip's life and the circumstances of his death.

"As Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Jews, people of other faiths or of no faith, our prayers and our thoughts are with Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family.

"At this moment, I call on all of our residents to keep their own family and friends at the front of their minds, to tell them that you love them, and most of all, to be kind."
