Diamond Kenilworth couple still solid ten years after celebrating marriage milestone

A Kenilworth couple who shared their secret to a long lasting marriage with Kenilworth Weekly News and Courier readers ten years ago on Friday (July 3) when they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary are now ready to mark another decade together.

Beryl and Edward Semple will be celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary under lockdown.

The pair met at a dance at the Parochial Hall in High Street when they were teenagers but it took a while for romance to spark.

Beryl, whose maiden name is Owen, said: "Edward chased me for a bit but I wasn't interested.

"I gave in after a while though and he won me over.

"I'm pleased about that now."

The couple got married on Edward's 21st birthday ar St John's church in Warwick Road before they spent their honeymoon in Wales.

They have three daughters, Deborah, Jayne and Tracey, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren with an eighth due to be born in August.

Tracey said: "Mum and dad have always had a solid and happy relationship and they are always there for us."

Beryl added: "Edward and I haven't had any real problems throughout our marriage and for that I'm very grateful.

"We're very good friends and I hope we have many more happy years together."

"The good thing is we never hold a grudge.

"If we have a row we just say our piece and forget about it."

The couple have been retired for many years now with painting in watercolours being one of Beryl's favourite pastimes since.

Edward was born in Ireland and grew up on a farm in Hill Wootton.

He worked part-time at Goldcrest Farm in Rounds Hill in his 70s.

Over the years the couple have enjoyed making time for each other, gardening, dining out and playing with their grandchildren.

Edward said: "I'm very lucky to have found Beryle because we have had so many wonderful years together.

"My life is better for finding her and I wouldn't change her for anything."
