He started as a talking point for the area but soon became a much-loved character in our Warwickshire countryside.

But the sad rumours have now been confirmed - the white wallaby known affectionately as Colin has died.

Colin became a popular figure in the Kenilworth area and people would often call us or post messages on social media when they spotted him in the Warwickshire countryside.

Sadly, vets had to put him to sleep this morning (Thursday) after he was hit by a lorry at about 8am.

"It all happened right in front of me," said Richard Staveley from Kenilworth, who was driving in the opposite direction on the Birmingham Road.

"It was just a tragic accident.”

Richard believes Colin may have hit the side of the lorry so the driver would not have been aware of it, adding: "The driver was not speeding and did nothing wrong."

Colin managed to get himself off the road and into a ditch so Richard stayed with him and called for the vets.

"I knew he was severely injured and could not be saved," he said.

"The vets were brilliant and came straight away."

608 Equine Vets, who treated Colin, said their vets had to put him to sleep as a result of his injuries.

“We know Colin had a lot of fans in the local community and people will miss spotting him out and about,” said the vets.
