A group of friends are taking on a 750-mile challenge to help raise funds and awareness for a Warwick-based charity.

Laura Creane, who is from Warwick and works at Mid Counties Co-Op, has volunteered for the charity Safeline for over a year.

Safeline helps and supports those affected by sexual abuse and rape.

Laura felt compelled to take the 'Steps4Safeline' challenge after hearing that funds from Safeline’s community and corporate fundraising have dramatically dropped since the end of March, due to Covid-19.

Laura will be joined by her four friends Bryony, Helen, Kirsty and Zoe, who together are aiming to walk 1.5 million steps - 760 miles - during November.

Laura said: "I am training to be a counsellor and the work that Safeline do is close to my heart.

"I would love one day to make a real difference and with the media putting sexual abuse cases under the spot light with stories coming forwards, this has driven me to help where ever possible.

"Not everyone has a voice and they may sometimes struggle to deal with the pain and that’s where Safeline step in, so we’re stepping up for supporting those victims in any way we can."

Laura, Bryony, Helen, Kirsty and Zoe are aiming to raise £2,000 between them and have so far raised £300 on their JustGiving page

They are doing as many daily walks as they can and meet up over the weekends to have a socially distanced group walk and catch up.

They are all from the Warwickshire area but Zoe recently relocated to Dorset, which is where she will be completing all her steps.

As a team they said: "Whilst we cannot be at the end of the phone directly to support victims of sexual abuse, hopefully raising donations will help those in crisis get the support that they urgently need.

"Our Steps4safeline challenge will hopefully raise awareness of Safeline and the incredible work they continue to offer nationwide and we are extremely proud that Safeline is routed in Warwickshire as we are all local girls."
