Concerns have been raised about the upkeep of Leamington Library over an ongoing issue with its main entrance door.

The sliding accessible doors to the library and museum, located at the historic Royal Pump Rooms, have been ‘out of order’ for several months.

Resident Judy Steele has questioned why this problem has been going on for so long considering that Warwick District Council (WDC), which owns the building, recently opened new offices there.

Judy said: “I cannot understand why WDC, which has spent over £400,000 on a new office, is not looking after the rest of the building.

“The heavy side doors have to be wedged open as they may be hard for the less strong to open, and impossible for wheelchair users. What a good job it is warm enough to do so without wasting energy.

“Recently I went into the building while there was heavy rain.

"At the entrance to the library were large plastic crates catching the drips from the leaking roof.

"Apparently, those are not the only leaks in this building.

“The new office did not seem have any leaks

A WDC spokeswoman said: “The council is aware of the long term problems with the sliding doors to the library and following failed attempts to repair them has been advised that they will need to be remodelled and replaced.

"This is unfortunately not a quick fix and will need the relevant listed building consent/planning permission from the conservation officer as well as being compliant with DDA standards.

"The council remains committed to the care and upkeep of one of Leamington’s most important public buildings and is working towards finding a solution.”
