Residents in the Warwick District have set up a community support group to give a helping hand to others who may be self-isolating due to the coronavirus.

The ‘Warwick and Leamington COVID-19 Mutual Aid’ group, which was set up on Sunday, already has more than 1,300 members on Facebook and 150 people signed up to volunteer.

The establishment of the group follows the advice from the Government which asks anyone who has COVID-19 symptoms of a high temperature or a new persistent cough to stay at home for seven days.

It was also revealed that over-70s may be asked to self-isolate for up to four months, and schools may be closed in a matter of days.

The group are building up a network of volunteers who will help those self-isolating by collecting and dropping off essentials like groceries and prescriptions, and by providing a friendly voice for those who need to talk to someone.

Founder of the group Kate Bamford said: “It is fantastic to see so many members of the local community come together at such a trying time.

"The response so far has been incredible to see. This virus may stick around for months on end, so it is vital that we all do what we can – as safely as possible – to look after one another.

"We hope that as many people sign up to offer support, whether it is by dropping off essentials, or simply having a chat with those affected to show that they aren’t alone.”

Matt Western, MP for Warwick and Leamington is supporting the group’s work. He said: “In this challenging time, we must pull together and support one another.

"The mutual aid group is a fantastic initiative which I wholly support.
