Leamington medical centre manager runs 100 miles to raise money for charity which cares for women and children experiencing domestic violence

A Leamington medical centre manager ran 100 miles last month to raise money for a charity which supports women and children who have experienced domestic violence.

Rebecca Severs or the Waterside Medical Centre took on the challenge set out by the charity Refuge in February and raised £355 for the cause with many staff making donations.

Rebecca said: "During the lockdown, cases of domestic violence have increased and charities like Refuge are essential in supporting vulnerable women, men and children.

"I think it is really important that we make people aware that domestic violence remains a very real issue for many people and that help is available.

"Reaching out can be very scary but people are able to speak to the charity directly or their GP if they feel more comfortable.

"I wanted to run the 100 miles to raise money and awareness about domestic violence and the important work Refuge do as the charity provide support to our patients.

"Our GPs are able to refer patients into their services to receive prompt support and staff at the practice are extremely fortunate to receive annual training by Refuge which means that our practice team are aware of domestic violence and how we can help patients who contact the practice.

"The charity has raised nearly £500k so far from the #100MilesForRefuge challenge and I would like to congratulate all of the runners and the people who have supported this cause.

"Nearly 8000 people signed up to the challenge and have been supporting each other online on social media. It’s been fantastic to hear other people’s stories and their reasons for completing the challenge.

"I am so grateful I could be part of this challenge and do a small part to fund the amazing work that Refuge do."
