Tutors and students on the Level 2 and Level 3 courses all brought items into the college to add to the haul and more than 80 items have been donated.

The essential food and toiletries items were specifically requested by Warwick District Foodbank and the package included tinned food, jars, soap, deodorant and a wide range of other toiletries.

Tutors on the course plan to continue the donations drive annually and are exploring avenues for students to support other charities as well.

Royal Leamington Spa College is part of WCG (formerly Warwickshire College Group) and the latest donation strengthens a growing relationship between the college group and the foodbank.

More than £500 worth of food was donated by the college group to The Trussell Trust last year as college staff gathered food that was set to go to waste from shops at three of the colleges in the group.

Lisa Berry, a make-up artistry tutor at the college, said: “All of the students were happy to get involved in the initiative and we hope the donations will be of great help to people in need across Warwick District.

“Warwick District Foodbank does exceptional work in the area and it is more important now than ever before.

“The students and tutors came together and decided that it would be good to show our thanks in some way and together we came up with the idea of the donation drive.

“At the college we place great importance on making a positive contribution to your local community and the students have been fantastic in helping to deliver this project.

“We hope to continue to be able to support Warwick District Foodbank and The Trussell Trust and will also be looking into how students can support other charities locally.”

Andy Bower, operations manager at The Trussell Trust’s Warwick District Foodbank, added: “We’re extremely grateful for the generous donation made by staff and students in the hair and beauty department at Royal Leamington Spa College.

“It’s always pleasing to receive donations of this type, especially in this difficult period with the pandemic.”
