Man dies following multi-vehicle collision on M40 near Gaydon

A man in his 40s has died and five others were left injured after two separate collisions on the M40 near Gaydon.

Warwickshire police responded to the northbound lanes of the motorway between junctions 12 and 13 near Gaydon shortly after 11pm last night (Monday September 21) following a report of a collision involving four lorries and a car. The Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service and the West Midlands Ambulance Service also responded to the multi-vehicle collision.

A man in his 30s suffered a serious leg injury and was taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent two paramedic officers, four ambulances and a critical care paramedic from the air ambulance service attended the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “When crews arrived they found the driver of one HGV, a man, with serious injuries. Ambulance staff worked closely with fire service colleagues to carefully extricate him from the vehicle whilst he continued to receive trauma care from the team of ambulance staff. Once released, the man was taken by ambulance on blue lights to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire for further emergency care.

“The driver of a second HGV and the driver of a car were out of their vehicles and had suffered minor injuries. Both were taken to Warwick Hospital. The driver of a third HGV was discharged on scene.”

At around 12.20am a second collision – involving three lorries and a car – took place on the same stretch of road on the motorway.

Officers attended along with teams from the West Midlands Ambulance Service, who sent an ambulance, a paramedic officer and a vehicle from South Central Ambulance Service to the scene.

A man was pronounced deceased at the scene. His next of kin has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers at this time.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman added: “Sadly, it quickly became apparent to ambulance staff that nothing could be done to save the driver of one HGV, a man, and he was confirmed dead on scene.

"The driver of a second HGV, a man, was described as ‘walking wounded’ and received treatment on scene before being taken to Warwick Hospital. A car driver involved in the collision, who had suffered minor injuries, was assessed by SCAS colleagues before being discharged on scene.”

Enquiries are ongoing and police are looking for witnesses to both collisions to come forward. Officers are also keen for anyone who has dashcam footage to get in touch.

Anyone with information should call 101 quoting incident 435 of September 21 (in relation to the first collision) or incident 9 of September 22 (for the second collision).

Three appliances from Warwickshrie Fire and Rescue Service responded to the collisions. Appliances from Leamington, Southam and Gaydon attended the scene and assisted police and the ambulance service. Crews left the scene at 10:45am this morning, Tuesday September 22.

Due to the seriousness of the incidents the northbound lanes of the M40 near Gaydon were closed for much of the this morning, Tuesday September 22.

Motorists were advised to follow the diversion route displayed on road signs. There may still be some delays on the motorway late this afternoon due to the collisions.
