The NHS has issued urgent guidance to residents following reports of Rugbeians struggling to book slots for Covid-19 testing.

For several days, residents have been taking to social media to vent their frustration at a lack testing appointments in the town.

As of September 9, Rugby was the worst-affected town for Covid-19 cases in Warwickshire, with with 23.8 cases per 100,000 people.

Earlier this week, Rugby council leader Seb Lowe urged residents to redouble their efforts in halting the spread, but stressed that the number of cases is still far lower than in other parts of the country.

Last week it was reported in the national press that UK labs are struggling to keep up with coronavirus testing demand, meaning people are being asked to get tested far from home.

Officials said they are working to fix the issue, with a new lab facility set to open in the coming weeks.

A mobile testing unit was brought to the town centre, where it is expected to remain until Saturday - but Rugbeians appear to be having difficulty booking a slot.

One resident told the Advertiser: "I have a covid testing station less than a mile from my house, no-one in the area can book a test.

"The Government has stopped the staff allowing people to get tested who haven't booked... even though people have symptoms and the staff are sitting there doing nothing.

"It should be test, test, test.

"Instead in Rugby it's just an empty car park full of staff waiting to test us.

"The Government site either directs you to Leicester or says no testing stations available.

"Why can't we just drive up and get tested until the government site actually does what it's meant to?"

Today, September 11, Rugby Borough Council shared a statement from the NHS.

It reads: "The Coventry and Warwickshire Healthcare system is aware of issues affecting the national Covid-19 testing programme which are preventing people with symptoms from getting a test.

"Although these issues are out of our control, we are able to provide the following guidance for anyone affected.

"Try requesting a test via the national online testing system at specific times of the day – early morning or after 8pm.

"If you have Covid-19 symptoms, self-isolate for 10 days or until you are able to get a test result.

"Ensure your household members self-isolate for 14 days until you or they are able to get a test result.

"Do not contact your GP or NHS111 as they are unable to assist.

"As is being reported in the national media, the current issues within the testing programme are the subject of intense focus and it is hoped that local testing capacity will improve as soon as possible."
