Plans approved to improve biodiversity on St Mary’s Lands in Warwick

Plans have been approved to improve biodiversity on St Mary’s Lands in Warwick.

Warwick District Council’s Planning Committee have approved proposals to introduce ‘wetland scrapes’ within the inside area of St Mary’s Lands.

Councillors have agreed plans for the creation of four shallow pools, which will seasonally hold water to attract wildlife including insects, provide feeding areas for wading birds and a breeding area for amphibians.

The work forms part of the Masterplan for the Warwick open space, which this summer has also seen the successful introduction of a wild bird feeding crop.

Species that are in significant decline, will benefit from the improvements.

Cllr Moira-Ann Grainger, Warwick District Council’s portfolio holder for neighbourhood services, said: “These measures for St Mary’s Lands will help to create a wetland habitat that will help to increase biodiversity in a species poor area.

"I would like to thank the St Mary’s Lands Working Party for their continued commitment to enhancing this beautiful open space for the benefit of future generations.”
