Volunteers are working hard to create a new community garden in the centre of Dunchurch after the parish council gave the go-ahead to the project.

The fruit and vegetable garden is taking shape outside the library, with the aim to give residents the chance to boost their mental health and make new friends.

Organiser Victoria Putt said she was inspired by conversations with friends about mental health concerns during lockdown and the UK’s increasing reliance on food banks.

She said: “I believe this is a great opportunity for Dunchurch residents who have felt isolated or anxious during lockdown to reintegrate into the community in a safe outdoor space.

“Our link to nature and its beneficial health impact shouldn’t be underestimated, there are an increasing number of scientific studies identifying huge advantages from reconnecting

with nature and becoming more sustainable. In a nutshell, nature makes us feel good.”

The community garden hopes to run two sessions, one for quieter gardening and a general slot for anyone ready to dive straight in.

Residents are already working on the garden, with volunteers from Bronte Close Community Garden (led by Alex Mrowicki) joining in last Saturday, April 24.

Life Investments in Rugby are sponsoring two of the raised beds to generate some revenue, and there are still more slots available if any other local businesses are interested.
