The government is still urging people to take “sensible precautions” in case of the threatened strike by fuel tanker drivers but said there was no need to panic buy despite Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude advising motorists to store some extra petrol in jerry cans.

Members of the Fire Brigades Union urged Mr Maude to withdraw this statement.

At the Milverton Total station on Rugby Road there were supplies of both petrol and diesel but Asda at Sydenham had no diesel and were expecting their petrol to run out by the early afternoon.
