Pictures: Regency dancing returns to Warwick after 200 years

Dressed in grand period costumes, dancers filled the restored Court House ballroom in Jury Street for a second year running this month - with plans already in place to secure it as an annual event.

Authentic period music was provided by the Dampiers Round musicians, with dance director Frances Richardson ‘calling’ the moves for dances including The Old Wigg and The Leamington Dance which were popular in Jane Austen’s time.

The evening was organised by the Unlocking Warwick volunteer group for the second year running and attracted visitors from across the UK.

Guests were given dance cards to book partners and during an interval a short extract from Richard Sheridan’s 1775 play, The Rivals was performed by members of The Court House Players.

Organiser, Tricia Scott, said: “The costumes were dazzling. Everyone joined in with great enthusiasm and clearly loved the evening.”

The group will discuss making the event a regular one when it meets in January.
