Planting the seed of engineering

An inaugural lecture in honour of a man who helped found the Imagineering Foundation to encourage young people into engineering will be given by a Kenilworth engineer.

Dr Alastair Graham Bryce, of Leamington, who died last year aged 76, helped found the organisation in 1999.

He was particularly associated with the Imagineering Clubs in schools for those aged eight to 16 to introduce them to engineering and manufacturing through fun, hands-on experiences.

Its aim was to target the engineers of the future.

He was an honorary secretary of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Alastair Graham Bryce Memorial Lecture will be held at its central London headquarters on June 12.

It will be given by Bob Shanks, chairman of the Imagineering Foundation, and an IMechE member for more than 50 years, who worked for most of his time in design and manufacture for the Swedish company Sandvick.

He said: “It will follow the development of the ideas and practices within Imagineering showing how Alastair’s marvellous mind crystallised them into themes.

“He not only contributed to establishing interventions that were likely to be effective in directing children towards technology and engineering, but he also developed material to expand the impact on children.”

Spaces at the free, open lecture can be booked at www.imeche.org/events/L324
