Police appeal after man in ‘police uniform’ tried to force entry into property

Warwickshire Police are appealing for information after reports of a suspicious incident where an individual, who is believed to have been wearing what looked like a police uniform, was seen on Rugby Road in Leamington yesterday evening (Wednesday).

A man reportedly approached a house at approximately 10.40pm and knocked on the door.

The occupier then answered with the belief that the individual was a police officer due to the police symbol on his clothing.

He then attempted to force entry to the property but was unsuccessful and left the area on foot.

He has been described as approximately six foot tall, was wearing a balaclava and dark clothing which looked similar to a police uniform.

Det Insp Liam Barry, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are eager to trace this individual as soon as possible and ask anyone who may have seen anything suspicious at the time of the incident in the area surrounding Rugby Road in Milverton to contact police on the 101 number.

“If you are unsure when approached by an individual wearing a police uniform please ask to see their identification.

“If they are unable to provide this please contact police by dialling either 101 or 999 as soon as possible.”

Any legitimate police officer will have no problem with this and will be happy to wait.
