He said: “Paul was a very loved son, brother, uncle and partner who lived life to the full and will be sadly missed by all those that knew him.”

Paul was killed when he was struck by a Stagecoach bus in Bath Street at about 11.30pm.

A 47-year old man, arrested on suspicion of murder, has been released on police bail pending further enquires.

A police spokesman said: “Police investigating the circumstances of the man’s death would like to hear from anyone who was in Bath Street between 11pm and 11.30pm near to All Saints church and the shops on the opposite side of the street on Friday night, especially anyone who may have seen two men together prior to the incident.”

Mohammed Muneer, owner of The Indian in Bath Street, said the victim had been among a group who had been eating at his restaurant shortly before the incident.

He said: “They were all really nice and they were all having fun and smiling and laughing.

“I went to get the bill and three or four people went out the door.

“It is really sad, things like that just shouldn’t happen. Nobody seemed drunk or anything.”

Zohan, a staff member at Tuscano’s near the scene of the incident, said he heard the commotion outside the takeaway.

He said: “I was in so much shock and people were weeping.

“The police closed the road and we had to close the shop early because the staff were too upset.”
