Police warn of doorstep callers and distraction burglars after report in Leamington

POLICE are warning householders to be on their guard against doorstep callers and distraction burglars following a report in Leamington on Friday.

Two men, who are described as having Irish accents, called at an address in Villiers Street at some time between 3.30pm and 4pm.

They claimed to need to check the party wall in the attic as the house next door was damp.

The owner declined to let them in and asked them to call back when she had someone with her.

The occupants of a house next door also reported a previous visit from men claiming to be representing a water company who said they needed to check the boiler, several days ago.

One of the men who called at the house on Friday is described as being short plump bald and wearing a striped jumper.

Nothing was stolen in the incident on Friday because the householder did not let them in.

Officers are reminding householders to always put the security door chain on the door before opening it to callers, even if they are expecting someone.

If they claim to be from an organisation ask to see their identity card, take it from them, with the chain still on the door, and check it.

If you have doubts you can find the number of the company they claim to be from in the telephone directory and ring it to check that they do work for the company.

There is no such organisation as the Water Board.

All employees with Severn Trent carry a photograph identity card.

If you have doubts ask the caller to come back at an appointed time when you can have someone with you.

Genuine callers will not mind waiting while you make these checks.

You do not have to let a stranger into your house even if they claim it is an emergency.
