Greens take council seat in Leamington by-election

The results of a by-election for the role of a town councillor for a ward in Leamington have been announced.

Yesterday (Thursday July 16) an election was held for a town councillor for the town centre Clarendon ward.

The vacancy on Leamington Town Council became available after Councillor Jamie Sweeney (Labour) resigned due to ill health.

There was a 24.2 per cent per voting turn out – with the Green candidate, Kiran Crawford, winning the seat.

Here are the results:

  • Kiran Crawford – Green – 474 votes
  • Raina Deo – Liberal Democrats – 451 votes
  • Josh Lewis – Labour – 417 votes
  • Michael Cox – Conservative – 212 votes

The Warwick District Green Party praised the win, especially after the Green Party came in at fourth place in 2025 in the last by-election for the town centre ward, which was for a district councillor.

A spokesperson from the Warwick District Green Party said: “To jump from fourth only last September to win this tight contest is an endorsement of both Kiran as a candidate and the Green Party's values of practical, positive, committed local action in our communities.

“Thank you to all the residents who came out to vote.”

On being elected, Cllr Kiran Crawford said: “Thank you to everyone who came out to vote and for the other parties for being fair and respectful.

“I will serve as a councillor in the way I campaigned – positive, practical and committed to supporting all our communities in Clarendon."
