Refugees in Chad helped by charity

LEAMINGTON-based international development charity Cord is to host a parliamentary reception with one of its most influential supporters, Chris White, MP.

The MP for Warwick and Leamington is a member of the Government’s International Development Select Committee and is already well acquainted with the conflicts that have arisen in the central African Republic of Chad where Cord has been working since 2004. It was then that 250,000 refugees were forced to flee there from their homes in the Darfur region of Sudan.

The charity has helped more than 100,000 Sudanese to rebuild their lives and currently has some 35,000 children in regular education.

Ahead of the parliamentary reception set for March 13, Mr White was shown a simple solar cooker which just might help improve relations. Mr White personally visited the region in 2009, before he was an MP.

Cord chief executive Brian Wakley said: “One of the biggest causes of conflict in the region is the scarcity of firewood for cooking which often creates tension and violence.”
