River Leam rescue leads to warning from fire service

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue service is warning people to take great care around water after a woman was pulled out of the River Leam last Friday morning.

A crew was called to the incident after reports were made of the 20-year-old woman being in the river and screaming.

A paramedic who was on scene had climbed down to the bank to help the woman out of the water.

The crew used triple extension ladders and lines to get both from the river to safety on The Parade.

The woman was reported to be extremely cold and was assisted into an ambulance to receive immediate treatment.

Deputy chief fire officer Gary Phillips said: “This incident could have had a much more tragic outcome had it not been for the quick thinking and bravery of all the emergency services who attended her rescue.

“Fortunately the Police, the Ambulance Service and Fire and Rescue all combined their efforts to make sure she was pulled out of the water to safety and treated immediately.

“It was an excellent example of how the agencies work together but not one that any of us wishes to see a repeat of.

I urge people to take great care around water particularly when there has been heavy rainfall and rivers are more dangerous.”
