Rugby Gaels were invited to be part of Warwickshire Gaelic Athletic Association's 1916 Easter Rising Centenary Commemoration at Pairc na hÉireann, near Birmingham Airport, on Sunday.

The two matches scheduled for Sunday, Roger Casement GAA v John Mitchels GAA and Rugby’s game v James Connolly GAA were selected as they involved two clubs named after men involved in the Rising. Sir Roger Casement was an active member in the organisation of the Rising who was captured gun running prior to it. James Connolly fought in the six-day rebellion and was one of the seven signatories of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic.

The commemoration was attended by the four teams present and their supporters. A piper played the lament The Foggy Dew and the Proclamation was read out by Sean Davies, the captain of James Connolly.

It was 100 years to the day that it was read outside the Post Office on O’Connell Street in Dublin by Padraig Pearse.
