Settlement is reached in Gurdwara libel case

FORMER Leamington mayors are among those facing legal costs after a libel case regarding the running of the town’s Sikh Gurdwara was settled.

It was alleged that Leamington town councillors Mota Singh and Balvinder Gill, also a Warwick district councillor, and former Leamington town councillor Balraj Singh Dhesi, as well as Ranjit Hayer and Shalvinder Mali, distributed defamatory literature during a two-year dispute about the future of the temple site off Tachbrook Park Drive that has divided its congregation.

The leaflets, sent to members of the Sikh community, made allegations about Dr Gurmit Singh, Jagtar Singh Gill, Narinderpal Singh Birdi, Phalvinder Singh Bhogal and Satnam Singh Nagra, who were then involved in running the temple.

A defamation action in the High Court has been settled. The claim for legal costs is reported to be around £240,000. A final court order confirming the terms will take place in October. A representative of the defendants declined to comment until the final hearing had taken place.
