Shining star is on the rise

IT was a very happy birthday for Leamington schoolgirl Issy Ferris, whose singing and songwriting career is already well underway even though she only just turned 15 on Saturday.

Months after making it to the final of ITV talent show Born to Shine, the Kings High School pupil was asked to record a track for Wolverhampton Wanderers as part of a charity project being led by celebrity actor/entrepreneur Phil Daniels.

And now Issy has recorded her version of Those Were The Days - a Russian folk tune brought into the spotlight by Paul McCartney in the 1960s - and made her first video.

She said: “It was amazing – I had all my friends in the audience and a band behind me, which I had never had before.

“It was a bit weird at first because it’s normally just me and my guitar, but it was a really good experience and a real confidence booster. Everyone was dancing.”

Having started her GCSE studies last month, it has been a bit of a struggle for the teenager to fit in as many gigs as she would like. She said: “I still play at the Newbold Comyn Arms once a month, as well as at other pubs and small festivals. It’s been quite hard for this first half term, but I keep playing when I can.

“I definitely want to be a professional singer. I just love singing.”

Issy, who will be appearing on the football club album alongside a number of celebrities, has also recorded some of her own work and will be releasing her first single in the new year.

Inspired by the likes of Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons and Ed Sheeran, Issy started singing at the age of six.

Her recording of Those Were The Days will be released on November 7 and is already available to watch on YouTube. Proceeds from the sale of the reocrd will go towards the Wolves Community Trust.
