Snow disruptions

HEAVY snow has caused disruption to waste collection, leisure and travel services across Warwickshire.

With temperatures plummeting to -10C and blizzard conditions over the weekend, the county council was aiming to grit 46 per cent of roads, as well as footways and cycleways that are frequently used.

The council began the season with 14,000 tonnes of salt to use on the roads, 5,000 of which has now been used. But people should note that salt stops becoming effective when temperatures dip below -5C.

In Warwick district, recycling and green bin collections for garden and food waste have been suspended for the week, while other collections may be subject to delays. People should leave out their grey rubbish bins and bags on their usual collection day and they will be collected as soon as possible. The council is aiming to resume normal collections by Monday December 27 and extra recycling and green waste will be accepted.

All waste and recycling collections in Stratford district have been suspended today, but people should leave their bins, boxes and bags out as normal.

Leisure centres and libraries across the county are likely to close early to allow staff to travel home safely. Anyone with evening classes is advised to call the centre in advance.

Leamington library was forced to close early on Saturday during the worst of the weekend’s weather. Both Carols and the Castles events in Warwick and Kenilworth, as well as all sports fixtures for the weekend, were cancelled. Leamington police also considerably reduced the launch of their operations Your Town, Your Choice and PubWatch, aiming to help people stay safe when out in the town centre, on Saturday night. A tent providing non-alcoholic drinks, a fire and rescue vehicle, a mobile police station and a St John Ambulance stand, were not present on the night as planned.
