Soroptimists make a splash for Swimathon

SOROPTIMISTS from the Kenilworth Club are preparing to swim again in the annual swimathon for local charities organised by their sister club in Leamington and Warwick.

But this time they are also getting involved with the running of the event which takes place on Sunday, October 14 at Warwick School Sports Centre.

Now that the holidays are over teams are urged to get their entry forms in - or apply for one if they haven’t already done so - to allow team members time to raise sponsorship.

To enter get together a team of six swimmers – friends, family, work colleagues - and a non-swimming captain.

Team members each swim in relay - two lengths at a time - for a total of 55 minutes.

There are cups to be won for the team raising the most sponsorship and for swimming the most laps. Teams are encouraged to name themselves something fishy or nautical.

Participating teams ranging from scouts to solicitors have raised over £140,000 for local charities and good causes to date.

The charities to benefit this year are The Myton Hospices and the local branch of Parkinson’s UK.

Leamington and Warwick Soroptimists started the annual swimathon in 1989 and as well as organising the event have entered their ‘Waterlilies’ team each time.

Kenilworth Soroptimists have also entered a team every year -“what we lack in skill we make up for in enthusiasm”. Both clubs have won a special trophy for their efforts.

The clubs are members of Soroptimist International a world-wide organisation for professional and managerial women concerned with improving the health, education and status of women and girls.
