Sunrise to sunset golfing marathon

THREE pals have set themselves a challenge – a dawn to dusk golfing session in Leamington to raise money for hospital care in memory of a victim of breast cancer.

Tracey Sykes was aged 42 when she died in 2009 and now her husband Lee is raising cash for the charity which supports cancer care services at University Hospital, Coventry.

Lee, a director of Radford Semele engineering and consulting firm Ricardo, said: “Tracey was given such magnificent care by the hospital that we wanted to raise money for its charity.

“Our fundraising will make a real difference to the speed and quality of care for local people diagnosed with breast cancer. It’s a great tribute to Tracey.”

He will be joined in the fundraising effort by Campbell Askwith, of The Maltings, Leamington, and Simon Kaye, of Milverton.

The trio will play 100 holes of golf on July 6 at Leamington & County Golf Club, walking 33 miles each.

And as they expect it to take 19 hours they will tee-off at first light, around 3.30am, and sink the last hole at around 10pm.

They aim to raise at least £15,000 for the UHCW Charity which supports University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust which runs University Hospital and St Cross, Rugby.

“Tracey was first diagnosed in 2001 and she went on to do a lot of fundraising for breast cancer research and I want to keep that fundraising going,” said Lee, who has two children, Sam, aged 18, and Maddie, 14.

The friends are also hosting two other fundraising events – one in which a new Jaguar car could be won by a team member who takes part in a corporate golf competition, also on July 6 and at Leamington & County Golf Club.

And on July 9 there will be a fundraising party in Leamington Tennis Club.
