Take part in the Warwickshire 100 cycle in Warwick to support Action Medical Research for Children

The Warwickshire 100, which raises money for Action Medical Research for Children, will start and finish at Warwick Racecourse on Sunday April 26.

The annual ride attracts about 700 cyclists who can chose to take on routes of 44, 60 or 100 miles depending on their preference and level of exerience.

Oliver Hiscoe, community fundraiser for Action Medical Research, said: “The event is 35 years old and is one of the top sportif events in the country.

“It’s not a race but it has all the bells and whistles of that type of event with motorcycle marshals, ambulance staff and a bicycle mechanic on hand and guys giving sports massages at the finish.

“There is also a prize of a magnum-sized bottle of Purity beer and a jersey for the cyclist who raises the most money for the cause.”

Action Medical Research started its life as The National Fund for Poliomyelitis Research and introduced the first polio and rubella vaccines in the UK.

Over the years the charity has developed ultrasound scans for pregnant women, created the award-winning Matrix Seat to support disabled children as they grow, discovered the importance of taking folic acid in pregnancy to prevent spina bifida, developed the Glasgow coma scale for head injury, protected children from meningitis, helped to relieve pain for severely disabled youngsters and imporved the lives of children with sickle cell.

Mrs Hiscoe said: “It’s all about finding cures and treatments for children.”

There are two options for entering the Warwickshire 100.

Fundraiser entrants can pay £25 but must then commit to raising at least £40 for the cause.

Sportive entrants pay an entry fee of £38 and are not required to raise any money in sponsorship as their donation is included in this.

Registration is between 6.45am and 8.30am and start times are between 7am and 8.30am.

The routes will alow cyclists to take in countryside scenery, canals and picturesque villages
