Tollbar roadworks get going

Preliminary works on the Government-funded Highways Agency project, which involves work on the A46 Tollbar End roundabout, A45 Stonebridge Highway and Stivichall Junction, has been ongoing since August, but the main construction works will start in the new year.

Project manager Paul Nagra said that road delays will “inevitably” occur, but road restrictions will be clearly signposted and at least one lane will remain open to traffic even during off-peak hours.

He said: “At peak times Tollbar is one of the most heavily congested junctions in the region. The improvements will improve economic efficiency by reducing congestion and improving the reliability of journey times and improve safety for road users - including pedestrians and cyclists.”

Mr Nagra said the works will also integrate the A45 and A46 with national, regional and local plans and policies.

People were invited to attend a public exhibition about the works at the Holiday Inn in Ryton-on-Dunsmore on Novmeber 28.

Galliford Try will be carrying out the works - which will include building a bigger roundabout and underpass at Tollbar and an extra lane in each direction between Stivichall junction and the Tollbar roundabout.

The project is expected to take three years. Mr Nagra said: “The main reason for the lengthy construction period is the very complicated nature of the traffic management and utility diversions at this very busy junction.”

Consultations with the police and highways authorities on how to manage traffic during the works in ongoing.
