Top accolade for Warwick's canal-side haven

The Saltisford Canal Arm is now a finalist in the Canal and River Trusts Living Waterways Awards in what has been celebrated by volunteers.

Mike Dutton, Chairman of the Saltisford Canal Trust, said “These are very prestigious awards and we are thrilled to have been identified as one of only twenty finalists.

“Our actual placing will not be announced until September. However, getting to the finals stage is quite an accolade.”

Staff, trustees and volunteers have all worked tirelessly to make substantial improvements to the stretch of canal which houses seven permanent residents in their own narrow boats.

Over the years the site has been transformed from a derelict space to tranquil moorings set in a landscape of gardens and orchards.

Walkers can pass through on the way to Warwick town centre and access is free.

The Saltisford Canal Trust is a canal charity set up 30 years ago to restore the canal arm, which dates back to 1799, and was originally the terminus of the Warwick and Birmingham waterway.

The group welcomes visitors on land or water, and has facilities including gardens, visitor centre and shop, and meeting space, The Cedar Room.

Appealing to help keep the space in its current state, Mr Dutton said they are always in need of volunteers to help ensure the stretch is well used and looked after.
