The Sunderland-based Pitball Studio - behind the Epic Games projects - is now recruiting for a number of posts at the new studio.

The firm will be joining Sega Hardlight - the mobile gaming studio offshoot of the Japanese gaming giant - and Exient, famous for its Angry Birds games series, both of which have also made plans to move to Leamington.

The introduction of new games industry firms to Leamington - the town often dubbed as ‘Silicon Spa’ - fulfills a prediction made by Philip Oliver, the former chief executive of Blitz Games, which closed down last autumn after going into liquidation.

Speaking to the Courier at the time, Mr Oliver - who himself set up a new company to work on Blitz’s financially robust projects - predicted that there would be several new start-ups formed by former Blitz employees and that games companies based elsewhere would set up divisions in Leamington as a result of the void being left by the iconic company, which had been operating in the town for 23 years.

Robert Troughton, managing director of Pitbull Studio, said: “We had considered an office in the Midlands area for some time due to the strong history of games development and the fact we already had some great programmers working in the vicinity.

“With the level of interest shown in our programming roles after the unfortunate situation with Blitz, it seemed like the right time to bring these plans to fruition.

“We are actively recruiting across all of our locations and are hoping to attract high-calibre talent to work in our new Leamington studio.”

Leamington and neighbouring towns Southam and Warwick together make up the third largest UK gaming cluster after London and Dundee.

Established games developers in the area include Codemasters, Freestyle Games and Playground Games.
