Two kicked off county council

Leamington councillor Penny Bould has been expelled from Warwickshire County Council for failing to attend meetings for six months - but she says it was because of ill health.

After the Courier was informed of her expulsion, along with Bedworth West county councillor Frank McCarney, the council confirmed that both had been disqualified because of their “non-attendance”.

Ms Bould, who had represented the Brunswick ward in Leamington’s Old Town for the Labour party since 2009, said: “I was physically unable to attend some county council morning meetings due to complications caused by an infection. Naturally I am sorry that happened. I always gave my apologies.”

A former BBC reporter, Ms Bould, who is a wheelchair user and prompted the building of accessible doors to the council’s chamber at Shire Hall, currently works as a lifecoach, psychotherapist and counsellor in Warwick.

She said: “I wish everyone in the ward well and I want to thank all those with whom I had enjoyable contact. My hope is that at future elections, we will see the right team running the county and the country with social justice at the heart of the agenda.”

She added that she had not claimed any expenses during her four-year term.

The Local Government Act states that councillors who have a recorded lack of attendance for six months should be disqualified.

There will be not be any by-elections as county council elections are already scheduled for May.
