A GROUP of unlicensed doorstep traders in Wellesbourne have been caught by the police.

The five sellers had been going from door to door in the village, purporting to sell goods, but police officers, responding to a call on Monday evening from a concerned resident of the Dovehouse Estate who believed that one of the callers had tried to put a device in the lock on their door while the resident was asleep inside the house.

The officers seized a black Mercedes being used by the sellers which did not have insurance and also seized the goods the doorstep callers were attempting to sell. They all gave addresses in Nottingham, but none had current pedlars licences.

Police remind members of the public that anyone selling door to door must have a current peddlers licence issued by their local police force.

The licence, which will be on police force headed paper will feature their name, a photograph and their address, an issue number and will be signed by a police officer - enabling the licence to be validated by the issuing police force.

Pedlars licences are issued for a period of 12 months only and checks are made by the police force where they live to establish the holders suitability to have a licence allowing them to trade door to door.

The licence must be shown to any member of the public who the trader is attempting to sell to or if they are asked to do so by a police officer or a police community support officer.
