Update: Arrests made after violent assault in Leamington on New Year’s Eve

Police in Leamington are appealing for witnesses to a violent assault on New Year’s Eve which left a 20-year old man in hospital with serious injuries to his neck.

The incident took place in the Pump Room Garden, next to Dormer Place at about 8.50pm on Saturday when the man was attacked by unknown offenders.

He sustained serious cuts to his neck and was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire where he required emergency surgery lasting several hours.

The wounds to his neck, believed to have been caused by a bottle, missed an artery in his neck by a millimetre.

He remains in hospital where he is described as being in a stable condition.

Police are treating the attack as attempted murder and would like to hear from anyone who saw anything in the Pump Room Gardens near to the bandstand, between 8.30pm and 9pm on Saturday night, or anyone who saw a group of males leaving the scene around that time.

DC Paul Whitehurst, of the Leamington Local Investigation Team, said: “It was New Year’s Eve so there would have been people around.

“The injuries to the man’s neck are extremely severe, and he is very fortunate that the bottle missed a main artery, otherwise this could have been a murder enquiry.

“We appeal for anyone with any information, no matter how small, to come forward.”

Five males aged between 17 years and 20 years, who were arrested in Beauchamp Avenue a short time later, were questioned in connection with the attack.

They have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact DC Whitehurst on 415000, extension 4296, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
