Van driver arrested after crash on A46 near Kenilworth

POLICE arrested a van driver after an ambulance crew found a cyclist lying beside the A46 near Kenilworth early on Saturday.

The ambulance crew were on their way to a 999 call shortly before 5am when they found the 60-year-old man lying on the grass verge near his bicycle, beside the southbound carriageway around 100m before the Leamington exit slip road.

The team immediately stopped and called the trust’s emergency operations centre. A second ambulance was sent to the scene and the man was taken to University Hospital, Coventry with serious head and chest injuries.

The accident is believed to have happened between 4.15am and 4.45am.

The driver of a white Mercedes Sprinter van was later arrested and has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Due to the nature of the collision and a police search to recover evidence, two lanes of the A46 had to be closed.
