The weekend-long Medieval Festival was held at the castle on Saturday and Sunday, seeing hundreds of history lovers turn out to be entertained.

As well as the joust on the field, there was a falconry display, displays of armour and skill by resident knights and chance to explore the historic ruins and newly opened viewing platforms.

Medieval markets, music and archery kept all ages busy, while classes led by Peterkin the Fool showed the tricks of how jesters used to keep their masters laughing.

Organisers at English Heritage hailed the weekend as a great success after hundreds turned out to support the action-packed festival and watch the knights do battle in the main event - the jousting tournament.

A spokesperson said: “The new Medieval Festival is English Heritage’s greatest medieval celebration, bringing together the very best bits from events all over the country in one almighty weekend.”
