Villages welcome pilgrims en route

CHURCH-goers from across Warwickshire took part in a 50-mile pilgrimage.

While people were invited to join in at any part of the route around the Coventry diocese, the Bishop of Coventry, the Right Rev Dr Christopher Cocksworth, walked the whole distance.

The event marks 50 years since the Cross of Nails Pilgrimage, during which a symbolic cross of nails was carried around the diocese before the inauguration of the rebuilt cathedral, which had been destroyed during the Blitz in 1940.

Among the church communities visited along the route were Fenny Compton, Harbury, Radford Semele, Warwick, Leek Wootton, Kenilworth and Long Itchington.

Speaking at St Nicholas in Radford Semele, the Bishop drew parallels between the destruction of that church, which was ruined in a fire in 2008, to the bombing of the cathedral.
