Warwick Castle bridge death trial starts on Monday

THE COMPANY which runs Warwick Castle will stand trial next week over the death of a visitor who fell from a bridge into the dry moat over four years ago.

Merlin Attractions Operations Ltd has pleaded not guilty to two charges under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

The charges brought by Warwick District Council follow the death of 72-year-old George Frederick Townley in December 2007.

It is believed he was crossing the bridge on his way out of the castle when he stumbled and fell over the low parapet which the prosecution says was just over a foot high.

The trial begins on Monday at Leamington Magistrates Court, Warwickshire Justice Centre.
