Warwick district children enjoy African culture

The Day of the African Child was celebrated by children from 13 schools in Warwick district involved with the One World Link relationship between the district and Bo in Sierra Leone.

Groups from 14 schools in the Leamington area gather to celebrate their links with schools in Bo, Sierra Leone, through One World Link. There are currently three teachers from Bo visiting.

Telford Infants School in Lillington hosted a special afternoon, in which three teachers from Bo took part, with African drumming, singing, story-telling and sports.

The pupils from the participating schools have been doing activities with the link all year, including projects of African culture, food, music and sport. They also exchange letters with children in Bo and Telford Infants School has recently sent football t-shirts to their link school.

The Day of the African Child, now in its 23rd year, commemorates the Soweto Uprising anti-apartheid protests on June 16 1976. Each year, a different theme is carried, with this year’s theme being ‘the elimination of harmful social and cultural practices affecting children’.
