Warwick firm fined after worker injured by falling box

A Warwick bathroom firm has been fined £4,000 after a worker was injured by a falling box of shower screens.

The worker was unloading a delivery of the screens – each weighing at least 25kg – when several fell from the lorry and crushed him.

It happened on February 9 at Quoba Ltd, Hermes Court, magistrates at Leamington Justice Centre were told.

The company admitted that it failed to provide a safe system of work for unloading lorries and also that it failed to provide employees with the necessary training and instruction.

The company was also ordered to pay £2,500 costs to prosecutors Warwick District Council at the hearing on October 21.

The court heard that a council environmental health investigation revealed that although the company had undertaken a risk assessment for shower enclosure deliveries, it was neither “suitable” nor “sufficient”.

When contacted by the Courier, Sean Roberts, managing director of Quoba Ltd, said: “The member of staff was released from hospital within two hours with bruising to the wrist.

“We implemented revised safety procedures within three hours of the accident. The employee had contravened company safety procedures by attempting to unload the vehicle by himself.

“We agreed that he could return to work on March 1 to light duties and he then commenced his normal duties on March 11. “As a family-run business, the safety of our employees will continue to be our priority.”
