Warwick Gates residents to be asked to help run centre

WARWICK Gates people are to be asked to help run their community centre as funding for the hall is withdrawn.

The community centre and badminton court in Cressida Close is currently run by St Margaret’s church, Whitnash, which did not apply for a grant from Warwick District Council after it was told it would no longer be eligible.

Now preparations are underway for a survey to ask residents how they would like the hall to be used, and to set up a new management group.

Whitnash town councillor André Davis, a member of the parochial church council that runs the hall, believes it can run without grants in the interim and added that a future committee would be set up so it could apply for funding to run services.

But he said the estate’s residents have so far taken little interest.

The hall is used by children’s groups but there are doubts over the future of its badminton court, which Whitnash mayor Cllr Judy Falp believes puts some off.

She added: “It needs to be owned and run by local people. We want the community to say what they would like.”
